During the 1800's this tongue in cheek variety show pushed social boundaries with witty skits, scantily dressed women and striptease. Burlesque then gained a sleazy reputation and the burlesque houses in New York City and across the country were shut down. This once forbidden performance art has made a comeback. Young women are creating their own style of burlesque using the humorous and seductive song and dance routine but with a modern twist. From the back-alley bars of New York City to Broadway, curtains are opening to crowds who come to be shocked and awed, tempted and teased, by the new stars of burlesque. There are not many jobs or opportunities in the town of Klikor. In the mornings men and women work in the farms. Her family bows to the priest and presents the required gifts which they have spent years saving for Mama to have. Despite pressure from her family, Mama decides not to live in the shrine and returns home to Togo. The priest and families take care of the fiashidis financially. In return, the fiashidi help lead people to prayer and assist the priest. Rituals are a part of daily life in Klikor. African traditional religion believes in one supreme being, Mawu, and many smaller deities. Many people have their own personal deities and shrines in their homes. The family, who practice African traditional religion, consulted a diviner who revealed the true cause of death was from insulting a god. The Ewe believe in cause and effect in the spirit world. If something bad happens or someone falls ill, the Ewe blame it on an upset god.
