PROJECT
While working at The FreeLace-Star newspaper in Fredericksburg, Virginia I was aware of the rapidly growing hispanic population - mainly immigrant laborers. In fact, the number of spanish speakers had tripled in the past six years since 1999. Latinos moved into suburban Virginia in search of work, cheaper housing and safer neighborhoods and changing the look and feel of the neighborhoods. However, the community of Fredericksburg was split and many did not know their new neighbors and the spanish speaking population was not represented in the local paper.
GOAL
To introduce neighbors to neighbors, promote understanding and to represent new community members in the paper.
APPROACH
I worked with writer Cathy Dyson to report and document the main themes such as culture, education, work, healthcare.
RESULT
This work was a seven part series published on the front page of the Sunday paper. It was translated into Spanish for an on-line version. Images were also published in National Geographic Magazine.
