PROJECT
It is not often I have the opportunity to travel just for me. Winter of 2011 my boyfriend and I went to Cuba for a couple of weeks. We go out salsa dancing back home and figured it was time to experience the real deal – Cuban style.
APPROACH
The focus of our trip wasn’t photography so I wanted to keep my gear simple. We weren’t sure where we were going (we crossed the island from one end to another), who were staying with (we stayed with families) or how we were getting around (chicken bus style) so I wanted to travel light. I brought one camera, one lens and one flash. Didn’t even bring a computer. Crazy, I know – but when you’re out dancing it’s best to be light on your feet.
CHALLENGE
Choosing to be part of the moment instead of always photographing the moment. The other challenge was dancing with the Cubans – man, they can dance!
RESULT
We had a beautiful trip together. Stayed up late talking with our host families, danced a bunch, learned and experienced a ton and made some great images.
