wife-of-the-god: Selassie looks into a broken piece of mirror in her bedroom in a traditional shrine of the Ewe people in Ghana, West Africa. I made this photo of Selassie while working on the story Wife of The God about a controversial practice involving women and girls in traditional African religion. I began this project as an undergraduate anthropology student doing a study abroad with School for International Training. I spent over a month in the field researching the practice and living with the people. A few years later I received a grant from Ohio University where I was a graduate student in Visual Communications to return to photograph. I lived in the shrines and in the villages for over four months and became very close with those I was photographing - close enough to even have a little boy named after me. Baby Romanoff!
